A Giver’s Strength

By: Gaebrielle Conde

In lieu of Thanksgiving, I’d like to place a spotlight on a Giver’s source of strength. A 'Giver' is somebody who strives to bring lightness to those around them; they ought to bring lightness through whichever love language they practice in your life, as you are the inspiration that keeps them going. Sounds familiar? That is because we are all a Giver, and the source of our strength is our inspiration.

It is human nature to feel needed and to feel cared for; it is what connects us. There are 5 love languages that humans use to express themselves: words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and receiving/giving gifts. Words of affirmation-- in my opinion, are the strongest form of expression, whether positive or negative. Words are sounds that come out of a person’s mouth and can’t physically harm anyone, but words carry heavy meaning and can be manipulating. I speak about a Giver’s strength because this strength is derived from the words (response even) they receive from their inspiration.

Words are like bullets in this generation, considering that any negative comment can shoot a person down. I think that in these times, where everything is evolving, we tend to forget that humans aren’t perfect and that we’ll always make mistakes along the way; we forget to take a step back and appreciate the blessings we have and have allowed ourselves to become blinded by greed. This Thanksgiving, I challenge you to be a Giver, not just to those around you but to yourself as well. Sometimes, our opinions become biased due to what we see on social media, and with that, I challenge you to look beyond these biases. Student-athletes, in my opinion, are often misunderstood; they wear the uniform, and people often form condescending opinions about their intellectual capabilities. These men are more than just athletes; they are also humans and future change-makers. I challenge the readers to come out and show their school spirit at one of the men’s soccer team games and see them perform and represent the school. These men have shed blood, tears, and tons of hard work in and out of the field, and despite the negative comments they receive about how they perform, they continue to be Givers and represent the CUE community. The men’s soccer team needs you to be their Giver, so consider coming out to support and donate to their fundraising event to raise money for training equipment that will strengthen their spirit and talents to best represent Concordia.
