Now, let us not forget our storied past and the amazing names we have so easily left in the past. There are a few names to remember.
Concordia College of Strathcona was one of the original names for our institution. This name was established back in 1932. Concordia College of Alberta was another one of the many name used to grace several road signs directing students to our school. Then there was Concordia College of Edmonton, followed closely by Edmonton College of Concordia, and Concordia College of the College. This was ultimately changed to Concordia College of Alberta.
After that, the word University was added to become Concordia University College of Edmonton. This title, was slightly more confusing than its predecessors because it coupled the words College, and University together. Friends and relatives would repeatedly ask me if I was attending a college, or a university? Based on the name of the school, I never knew how to properly respond to that deep and philosophical life question. The name then became Concordia University College of Alberta.
At one time, Concordia was also known as Concordia College of Edmonton Alberta. This name was used to properly emphasize the true location of our fine institution. We didn’t want it to be confused with Concordia University, which is located in Montreal. The Concordia in Montreal is not affiliated with the Concordia in Edmonton, which is surprising to some.
Some names last longer than others. For example, our original name in 1921 was Concordia College. This name stuck around for a long time. It’s funny to think that after all these years, the name Concordia has still stuck around. Maybe our school should change it’s name one last time and go back to its true roots. I suggest that we change the name to Concordia; just Concordia. We know that it's in Edmonton, and we know that it's in Alberta. We know that it’s a university, and we know that there's only one University of Alberta in the city of Edmonton. We can rest assured knowing that we were once the only University of Edmonton in Edmonton, with a bunch of other Universities who are all in Edmonton. So let’s simply call ourselves Concordia. Concordia, I like that name. We all know about Concordia.
New to Concordia this year, is the absence of the cross in our institutions official logo. The classic picture of a door still stands, but the cross which used to be inside the first O of Concordia has been put to rest. Our timeless door logo was introduced a few years ago to mirror the original front entrance to the building. In addition, small waves were added underneath, which represent the North Saskatchewan River. By choosing to remove the cross, Concordia made the bold decision to slightly distance itself from its religious past. It is no longer a religiously based university.
There are still a few other new changes I would like to briefly shed some light on in the article. For one, new name changes also mean new and exciting acronyms! CUE (Concordia University of Edmonton) replaced everybody's favorite CUCA (Concordia University College of Alberta).
Quick shout out to CUCA Spooka.
At one time in our history, CUCA was simply referred to as the big CC in the early 90’s. The CSA (Concordia Students Association) was famously once recognized as the CSBGA (Concordia Student Body Governance Association).
Let’s end this history lesson and take you back to Concordia University of Edmonton, the new name. I like this one. It’s good. Just like it says on the Concordia website: A new name. A new vision. A new direction.
See you on the road.
