A grade eight student named Jordan Nichols wrote this incredible poem called “Our Generation”. He highlights what is wrong with our society, while also extending the immense hope he has for change. His older brother, Derek Nichols, posted a picture of his poem on Twitter and since then, it has appeared on other websites and throughout social media. The structure of this poem is extremely artful. At first, this poem seems like an indignant, hopeless explanation of the bleak future that will come from a useless generation but, when you read the poem, line by line, from the bottom up, you see a completely different meaning. Jordan’s poem becomes an uplifting beacon of hope for him and all young people.
It is ingenious writing like this that helps me believe in young people. Often when you see the types of young people in popular culture, it seems as if the world is going to blow up in smoke. 18 year-old pop stars getting arrested for drunk driving, former child celebrities swinging from wrecking balls half naked - it’s easy to lose faith in our generation. This poem makes me believe that there still we be great men, men who stand for democracy, appreciate intelligence, and will fight for what is right.
This poem uses short lines to create an intriguing and fast paced rhythm. The subject matter and the simple language allows this poem to be accessible to everyone. It is interesting without using flowery smilies or thesaurus thumping terms. It is direct and clear; its simplicity is part of what makes it great. It does not use rhyme or a particular meter, though the beats seem completely clear.
This poem is an inspiring work of art and is something that all writers could strive for.
Our Generation by Jordan Nichols Our generation will be known for nothing. Never will anybody say, We were the peak of mankind. That is wrong, the truth is Our generation was a failure. Thinking that We actually succeeded Is a waste. And we know Living only for money and power Is the way to go. Being loving, respectful, and kind Is a dumb thing to do. Forgetting about that time, Will not be easy, but we will try. Changing our world for the better Is something we never did. Giving up Was how we handled our problems. Working hard Was a joke. We knew that People thought we couldn’t come back That might be true, Unless we turn things around (Read from bottom to top.)
