For those of you who are new to Concordia or may not have met me yet, my name is Blake Novak, a management student with an emphasis in Human Resources, the President of the Concordia Business Association (CBA), as well as the Business Representative for the Concordia Students Association (CSA). A bit of a mouthful, I know, so let’s split the difference and call me Blake. Or Mr. President, whatever is more comfortable for you. I also am an avid gamer, enjoy playing my ukulele, and love to cook.
I am in my final year at Concordia, and plan on getting a lot accomplished during these next 8 months. As a writer for the Bolt, I will be covering topics relating to business, such as the prospects in the current job market, new trends in the needs of students and employers, as well as books related to leadership and management. I spent a great deal of the summer cutting through my reading list of business related literature, covering books such as Quiet: The Power of introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain, and Start with Why by Simon Sinek. Both authors are leaders in their fields of business and leadership, and have had opportunities to speak to audiences regarding their knowledge through TED Talks and other events. I also finally got to read World War Z, but speak to me in person about that book, because there isn’t enough room on this page for me to rant about that amazing novel!
As I stated previously, on top of being a writer for the bolt, I am also the President of the CBA and the Business Rep for the CSA, meaning I will be your one stop shop for all things student government relating to the management program. Over the summer, the CBA council and I worked hard at preparing for this year; planning numerous events, preparing budgets, finding sponsors and connecting with the business community. We are going to continue our commitment to connecting students with professionals in their field, and creating opportunities for networking to take place at the university. As you’ll soon learn, networking is an important part of business, and will only help you achieve your goals. There is life outside the campus, and our goal is to bring it to you!
Speaking of the CBA, you should attend the Management Student/Faculty Mixer on September 10th, where there will be refreshments and a gathering of management people that you should really meet. Come on by in Tegler from 11 to 1 and meet your faculty and CBA council!
So look forward to the year! Be excited for the tests, papers, group projects, thunderwear Fridays, pizza lunches, bake sales, international days, arts days, science week and loads of other activities that will be happening around the campus! Participate and meet people! Get to know your fellow Concordians, and join a club. *Cough* Concordia Business Association *Cough* Excuse me, something caught in my throat there. And come by the CSA office and meet me! People tell me I’m a nice guy, and my office hours can be too chill sometimes. My hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week from 11am to 12pm, unless another scheduled event pulls me away. Regardless, have a great year and may guesses be ever in your favor come exam time!
