Winter Bucket List

Written By: Payton McKelvey

Winter is on its way-- the smell of snow is lingering in the air, but it’s not quite here yet. I know that not everyone likes this season, especially not the cold weather that comes along with it, but there are also so many wonderful activities that come with winter too. Some of you may have read my article on making your fall bucket list-- now I am coming at you with the encouragement to make a winter bucket list. A winter bucket list is a great way to get out of the house and do all sorts of fun activities with friends and family.

Now, I won’t go giving you guys a whole list because the fun is coming up with your own unique ideas that suit you and your interests. I will, however, give you a couple of ideas to get your list started on the right track! One classic winter activity is ice skating; there are many different places where you can enjoy some fun and casual ice skating with friends and family. Two places in Edmonton that are easily accessible are the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace and the ice rink that is created at the Legislative grounds every year. The Ice Palace is a great indoor rink that is perfect for those who don’t want to get too cold, and the Legislative rink is a beautiful outdoor rink surrounded by bright twinkling Christmas lights for all to enjoy. If you’re worried about not having skates then do not fret, there are plenty of places that rent skates or places like United Cycle that resell used skates for cheap. So grab a pair of skates, gather a few friends, and get those blades on the ice.

Next up, we have another much-loved winter activity, and that is tobogganing, also known as sledding. Some may believe that taking a toboggan out to the hill is only an activity for children but trust me when I say, give it a try before you sell it short; who knows, you may just enjoy yourself. Finding a sled is low cost, especially if you pop to your local Walmart and pick up a silly carpet-- you may discount the silly carpets but trust me when I say that that silly carpet will take you for the wildest ride of your life. Bring a few friends with you out to a sledding hill and see what kind of jumps you can build out of snow and what kinds of crazy tricks you can pull off. What better way to end it all off than to hop in your car and go get some delicious hot chocolate to warm you back up? I recommend Tim Hortons hot chocolate because they have the richest and creamiest hot cocoa as well as many fun variations on the classic hot drink.

Well, there you have it folks, a couple of fun winter activities to start your bucket list on the right track. I hope you all have a wonderful winter, and make sure to bundle up and keep out the cold.
